Brandon Valley school year starts today
Wednesday, Aug. 20 marks the first day of the 2025-26 school year for students in grades 1-12 at Brandon Valley. The first day for kindergarten and junior kindergarten kids is Friday, Aug. 22.
Current needs at the Brandon Food Pantry
Current needs at the Brandon Food Pantry are canned chicken, pizza sauce and crust, mustard and ketchup, pancake mix and syrup, cake/brownie mix, peanut butter, pudding snack packs, shampoo, body wash, bar soap and laundry detergent.
To make appointments for pickups or donations, call 582-7001. The BAFP is open from 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Used eye glasses and hearing aids for the Brandon Lions Club may be dropped off at the BAFP.
Manley Customer Appreciation event is Thursday
It’s not summer without Manley Tire & Oil’s annual Customer Appreciation open house. The event is from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, and will offer free food, Trudy’s treats, live music, inflatables for the kids and giveaways.
Rummagers to invade Brandon this weekend
Brandon’s Citywide Fall Rummage Sales are this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22-23.

Marching & Melon Madness is Friday
The Marching Lynx will preview their 2025 field show, “Against the Grain” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at the BVHS Stadium. Free watermelon is served following the performance. The event is free and open to the public.
SD BBQ Shootout at Huset’s Aug. 29-30
South Dakota BBQ Shootout joins the action at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon Aug. 29-30. The main event is the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned professional BBQ contest. Teams from across the U.S. and Canada will compete for $13,000 in cash prizes (KCBS, $11,000; People’s Choice, $2,000).
In addition, BBQ Pit Pass holders can try the creations of the professional pit masters. Teams will offer up to 1-ounce samples to hand out to BBQ Pit Pass holders. There will be more samples than one person can eat, so each ticket holder will vote for their favorite five samples. All these votes will be added up and the $1,500 champion will be crowned with the top five receiving prizes. Each team will also receive $2 for each vote received.
