The Lynx mat men came away from Saturday’s Les Tlustos Invitational in Brookings with a champion, a pair of fourth-place finishes and one fifth-place. Out of 20 teams, Brandon Valley claimed 10th, but did not field their usual varsity lineup.

“Many of our regular varsity starters were off on Saturday,” BV head coach Derek Outland said. “We’ve had a number of weigh-ins the last couple weeks and a couple guys are fighting through some injuries.”

Pierre handily won the invite, racking up 225 points to runner-up Harrisburg’s 156. Third place went to the host Bobcats, who compiled 155.5 points and were edged by the Tigers.

BV’s lone champ was senior heavyweight, Navarro Schunke. The four-time state champ was lightly tested, as he disposed of all four of his opponents in just over three minutes combined.

Beckett Rehorst (106) won his first matches by pin before West Central’s Kaden Haakinson claimed a 7-3 win by decision. Rehorst reeled off three more wins to set the stage for a second meeting with Haakinson for third place. Rehorst forfeited the match.

Hayden McGuire (138) also won his first two matches of the day before he suffered defeat. In the third-place match, he faced Ramsey Williams of Lennox, who claimed the 5-1 decision.

Zander Nielsen (144) powered through his first three opponents and lost his next two matches en route to the fifth-place match. In that match, he out-scored Jefferson’s Ben Neilan 4-1 to nab the fifth-place prize.

Lady Lynx

The Lady Lynx performed well on Brookings mat, with four wrestling their way to the finals. That effort earned the BV girls a third-place team finish.

Kendall Clayton worked her way to the top of the 100-pound weight class. In the title match, she claimed the win by decision over Rapid City Central’s Mataya Jacobs.

Senior Mary-Katherine “MK” Joseph also faced a Cobbler in the finals of the 107-pound weight class. She pinned Irini Poka in 1:46.

In her two matches, Grace Carson (136) lost by pin to Dell Rapids’ Rylee Bird.

BV’s final place winner was Brenna Reker. She landed fifth place by shouldering Bailey Credeur, also from Dell Rapids, at the 4-minute, 55-second mark.

In their final home dual of the season, the Lynx host the Harrisburg Tigers this Thursday, with the girls taking the mat at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7 p.m. Thursday’s dual is also senior night at Brandon Valley.

On Feb. 8, the Lady Lynx head to Harrisburg for the ESD Conference Tournament, which gets underway at 5 p.m.

The state duals for the boys are on tap for Saturday, Feb. 10 at Brookings, with wrestling getting underway at 11 a.m. Seedings for the state duals will be determined following Thursday’s dual.

BV will host the Region 2A tournament on Friday, Feb. 16 starting at 2 p.m. The Class A State Tournament Feb. 22-24 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls closes out the 2023-24 season.
