The Absent Uncle: One leg at a time ...
Over the years a person runs into so many different kinds of people. Upon the meeting – whether it be personal or professional – a first impression is always taken. Sometimes that first impression changes; sometimes not.
This particular rant is directed towards the males of our specie. Can’t say a female wouldn’t fit into the same – but for today, let’s just consider this about us guys.
Ever met a guy that knows everything, has done everything, is willing to tell you everything he knows and assumes (and makes sure you know that he believes) you know nothing? Sure, you have! We have all met that guy. If an opinion is needed, he offers it; if an experience would verify a statement – he has had it.
What is worse is if that person is somehow in a position of authority, a position that puts him a bit above anyone else in the crowd and regardless of how tenuous or slight that “position” might be, his word is better than anyone else in the room.
Being brought up to respect authority and doing my time in the military where you abide with RHIP (Rank Hath Its Privileges) you have a tendency to figure out a way to deal with this tomfoolery or as it used to be termed, “puffery”.
I really don’t remember which of my mentors gave me this piece of wisdom in dealing with such a person, but it was so simple: “Just remember he has to put his pants on, one leg at time, same as you”.
So often when I invoke that measuring tool on a guy really not meant to be the person in authority, I often grin at the thought of a fool trying to put his pants on (not sitting down) with both legs at once. With a bit of pre-planning, it can be done, but that is not in this type of person’s playbook. The vision of hopping around, possibly falling down, but certainly embarrassing himself puts him in perspective (at least in my mind!). That works for me; whether it be a pair of overalls or jeans, some khakis, or a tailored pinstripe suit – it is all the same. Your unearned puffery is deflated (again, at least in my mind). We are all equal.
The ultimate equalizer – we all have to put our pants on – one leg at a time.
