Jill's Journal: Springtime is a great time
Sometimes, there are just too many topics to write about in this column.
This, is one of those weeks.
For starters, I’d like to invite our readers to tonight’s event at the Performing Arts Center at the high school. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the approximate 20-minute video will be shown at 7 p.m.
Degaje Studio is the brainchild of Dan and Kari Elliott and Abe and Abby Chen. The Brandon-based business will be premiering their very first, The Good People Project. I just happen to have a part in it. There’s no cost to attend. The only investment is a snippet of your time.
They’ll also talk about another endeavor of their business, The Gratitude Project. I’ll let them explain more about that tonight, but what I will say is the spotlight will be on 605 Root and their bunkhouse project that has enlisted the help of the construction trades program at Brandon Valley High School.
Monday brings another opportunity for the communities of Brandon and Valley Springs to show up. At 9 a.m. the Brandon VFW and American Legion and their Auxiliaries will once again conduct a Memorial Day program. The event starts at the Veterans Memorial, located at the intersection of Splitrock and Aspen boulevards, and then proceeds to the Brandon Lutheran Cemetery.
At 11 a.m., the Valley Springs American Legion Post’s Memorial Day program begins. This program begins at the Legion Hall and includes a guest speaker, patriotic songs, and other Memorial Day-related readings, including the Gettysburg Address. The program then proceeds to Pleasant View Cemetery for 21-gun salute, and then returns to the Hall for a catered dinner for a nominal fee.
With the school year wrapping up Thursday, that only means one thing: Our Lynx sports teams will be gunning to bring home their respective state hardware. It begins Thursday with the boy’s tennis team in Rapid City, followed by Friday and Saturday’s state baseball tournament at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana University.
Next week, is the state track and field meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, and the state girls’ softball tournament, which will also played at Augustana.
Our on-the-rise Lady Lynx golf team caps off the spring sports season with their state tournament the first week of June in Watertown.
If you’re in the mood for a bit of carnival fun and food, make sure to stop by McHardy Park this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for Brandon’s Big Celebration and car show. The three-day event is spearheaded by Celebration United Methodist Church, and is sure to fun, family event, no matter your age.
And, in case you missed it, I was honored to tell Spencer Thorslands’s story one more time, this time with a happier ending. BV grad Ryley McKeown is sure to benefit from the kindness of the This Is The Way Foundation and the Eventually Scholarship.
