Water Smarter program expands, urges residents to ‘fix a leak’
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “the average household’s leaks can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year and 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day. Common types of leaks found in the home include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves. These types of leaks are often easy to fix, requiring very few tools and hardware that can pay for themselves in water savings. Fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on their water bills.”
The week of March 14-20, 2022 is the EPA’s “Fix a Leak Week,” an annual reminder for people to check household plumbing fixtures and water systems for leaks. Since its inception in 2018 the Brandon Water Conservation Committee has encouraged the public in finding ways to be “Water Smarter,” including the creation of an incentive program to provide rebates to Brandon utility customers who purchase water-conserving devices. The City Council recently approved the newest addition to the Water Smarter Program, where Brandon Utility customers can receive up to $125 towards the purchase of an Energy Star© rated dishwasher.
Through the Water Smarter Incentive Program last year, the City provided over $12,000 in rebates to Brandon utility customers who purchased high efficiency toilets, washing machines, weather-based irrigation controllers, irrigation system rain sensors, programmable irrigation timers, and rain barrels. 2022 will be an exciting year for the City of Brandon. The City’s new 1.25-million-gallon capacity water tower will be operational later this year, and the water treatment plant expansion design is near completion. Our future water needs have been well-planned and will result in a sustainable water supply for years to come.
