Walter J. Webb, 78, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024. Memorial services were held Monday, Sept. 16, 2024 at Faith United Church, Brandon. Interment was in he Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls.
Walter Jon Webb was born March 14, 1946 in Veblen, S.D., to Georgia (Rada) and Ross Webb. He grew up in Cayuga, N.D., with his five siblings. Walt attended grade school in Cayuga and high school at Sargent Central in Forman, N.D. His family and close friends from his early years have always fondly called him “Jack.”
After graduating from high school in 1964, Walt attended Molar Barber College in Fargo, N.D. He worked as a barber at Ellsworth Airforce Base near Rapid City. Walt then moved to Roundup, Mont., where he was working in a barber shop when he met Dawn Engen who was working as a new nurse at Roundup Memorial Hospital. Walt and Dawn were married in Northwood, N.D., on July 19, 1969.
Walt and Dawn moved to Montevideo, Minn., where they made their first home. Walt took a job selling Michelin Tires while waiting for a new barbershop to open. He found sales to be a good fit for him, so he continued in that field. Their first daughter, Holly was born in Montevideo on Dec. 23, 1972. The following year, Walt took a job selling semi-trailers in Sioux Falls, moving the family to Brandon, S.D. Their second daughter Melanie was born Nov. 26, 1974.
Walt enoyed spending time with his family and being at their cabin on Lake Cochrane as much as he could. Walt and Dawn are long time members at Faith United Church in Brandon, where Walt served as an elder. He also planned and assisted with many meals at church. Walt was an active member of the Brandon Optimist Club for many years, and enjoyed hobbies of bowling, golf, and playing couples softball and volleyball in his younger years. Walt continued selling semi-trucks until retiring from Sioux Falls Truck and Trailer at the age of 75.
Walt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011 at the age of 65. He spent the last nine years of his life receiving chemotherapy every three weeks to keep the cancer at bay. Throughout his battle, he remained positive and overall healthy enjoying life to its fullest.
Walt died peacefully on Sept. 8, 2024 at Good Samaritan Village Rehabilitation Center.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dawn Webb of Sioux Falls; daughters, Holly (Marc) Madison of Sioux Falls, and Melanie (Ryan) Warner of Larchwood, Iowa; six grandchildren, Kelsey (Blake) Spotts, Braden Madison, Isabelle Warner (Anthony Wollum), Ashlyn Madison, Brenna Madison, and Taylor Warner; one great-grandson, Beau Spotts; brothers, Duane (Win) Webb of Merced, Calif., and Dale Webb of Manchester, N.H.; sister, Wanda (George) Kenney of Lake Junaluska, N.C.; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Georgia (Rada) Webb; sister, Dorothy Sutton; and brother, Jim Webb.
