Throwback Classic at the Pentagon: Bucks hand Lynx second loss

Evan Talcott felt right at home in the old-school atmosphere of the Sanford Pentagon Thursday night, as the Lynx junior burned up the net for 23 points. But despite Talcott’s display, the Yankton Bucks prevailed in the 49-37 outcome.

Yankton got a balanced effort from its roster, with no player finishing with more than eight points. And while the Bucks shared the wealth production-wise, some of Yankton’s biggest damage came in the second quarter, where they drained five treys to take a 28-14 lead into the break.

“Playing in the old-school Pentagon game is always a fun evening for the guys. Unfortunately, it was not one of our best performances, and we knew we’d have some evenings like this with this group,” Brandon Valley coach Brent Deckert said. 

Although the Lynx kept Yankton from scoring from the outside, the Bucks brought their game inside, earning a 36-22 advantage at the end of three and the 49-37 game-ending tally.

Yankton freshman, 6-foot-7 Matthew Mors was held to eight points, along with and senior guard Jack Wolfgram , while Ben Jurrens and Cooper Cornemann both added seven points off the bench. Cameron Krejci chipped in with six points. Rex Ryken and Casey Krejci both scored five.

In addition to Talcott’s 23, Max Wilde had five and Caden Deckert had a single 3-pointer.

BV had a slight edge on the boards, hauling in 28 to Yankton’s 23. Carter Olthoff, himself, accounted for eight.

The Lynx dished out five assists, generated nine steals and turned the ball over 20 times. Yankton recorded 10 assists, four steals and matched BVs 20 turnovers.

“We are replacing a very experienced team and it really showed Thursday night,” Deckert said. “It was a choppy game all night and we got into some foul trouble, which we didn’t handle well.”

Both Cade Terveer and Olthoff each went to the bench with five fouls. “On the good side, we’ll always continue to keep building and learning with this team. Win or lose, this is a team that will continue to battle through the ups and downs of the season.”
