Talcott drains 6 treys in 67-53 win

Yankton was a good team. Watertown is, too. And the Lynx went to battle against both last week, coming away with a loss – and a 67-53 victory.

“Just when you think it can’t get tougher, we head up to Watertown to play the undefeated Arrows right after they beat the No. 1-ranked team in the state. Welcome to high school basketball,” head coach Brent Deckert summed up. “Watertown has never been an easy place to play, but we came out with more determination than we’ve seen all year.”

Evan Talcott burned up the nets for 23 points, 18 of which came from his 6-of-8 3-point shot effort, to lead the Lynx.

“Evan has been playing some great basketball this year and he got some help from all over the lineup,” Deckert said. Cade Terveer scored 14 points – six of which came from 3-point territory. Nate Keegan dropped in a dozen, also picking up six counters from the outside, while Carter Olthoff and Alex Tietjen tossed in eight and five points, respectively.

The Lynx kept their composure and built a nice lead in the first half, posting a 22-13 advantage after a quarter of play and held a 36-29 lead at the half.

“Every time Watertown made a run we were able to answer,” Deckert said. 

The Lynx kept up their offensive pace through the second half, posting a 52-39 advantage after three quarters of play and the 67-53 end result.

For Watertown, Colton McLemans had 11 points, Brandon Florey had nine and Solomon Bach and Parker Johnston both accounted for seven.

Brandon Valley had their way on the boards, with Terver hauling in seven of the team’s 26 total. Watertown had 22. The Lynx registered a dozen assists, two steals, one blocked shot and 13 turnovers. The Arrows were credited with four assists, a trio of steals, a solo blocked shot and 10 turnovers.

Saturday’s road win was a boost to the team, Deckert said.

“We still have a way to go with this team but you can tell every day in practice we’re getting a little bit better, and it was great to see the focus we played with tonight,” the coach said.

BV continues their run against ESD Conference opponents this week when they host the Harrisburg Tigers Thursday night and Aberdeen Central on Friday. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. The Lynx are then on hiatus until Jan. 2 when they hit the road for a meeting with the Mitchell Kernels.
