Supe's On: Local control, funding are top concerns of BVSD

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD Superintendent

The 2025 South Dakota Legislative Session is past the midway point. The Brandon Valley School District appreciates the various opportunities available to engage with our District Legislators to promote and discuss various legislative topics regarding public education.

In addition to ongoing communications throughout the session, the Brandon Valley School District has utilized several key engagement strategies. The 2025 BVSD Legislative Breakfast was held on Thursday, Dec. 12, prior to the start of session. In addition to hosting the district’s Legislative Breakfast, the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce provided another valuable opportunity to engage with Legislators last week during Brandon Day at the Legislature.

The main areas of concern for the Brandon Valley School District during the 2025 Legislative Session surround funding and local control. Both areas have been communicated and shared with our District 2 Legislators. To this point, both areas have been subject to harmful legislative proposals, and we continue to fight for our kids and public education.

While we may not agree on all education issues, I greatly appreciate each of our Legislators’ civic service. Their commitment and service to the people play a significant role within South Dakota governance.
