Rollie D. Smith, 79

Rollie David Smith, 79, Brandon, S.D., died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Rollie fought a long and hard battle with heart disease, but in the end, it took its toll on his body. He died peacefully, with his family at his side.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, at Brandon Lutheran Church with funeral services beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the South Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery.

Rollie David Smith was born April 2, 1945, the son of David and Elsie (Kehr) Smith in Sioux Falls. He was raised and educated in Sioux Falls. Rollie proudly served in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked as a nurse at the Sioux Falls VA Hospital and then was a barber in Brandon for over 30 years. Rollie was united in marriage on Oct. 18, 1986, to his wife, Carol Doppenberg. 

Rollie’s greatest joy was visiting with his customers to catch up with the daily gossip. He also enjoyed his “Happy Hour” with his family and friends. Rollie enjoyed watching the Vikings and the Twins games. He liked to fish, camp, and travel. Rollie and Carol went on tropical vacations almost every year for the last 30 years. 

Grateful for sharing their life with him is his wife, Carol; his siblings, Jerry (Tari) Smith, Janet (Jon) Shatter, and Tom Smith; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

Rollie was preceded in death by his parents, David and Elsie Smith; sisters, Elsie Gravning and Pamela Miller; brother, William Smith; brother-in-law, Richard Miller; son, David Smith; and daughter, Darlene Schliemann-Anderson.
