Rain dampens Cool Car Show, but not spirit of event

A steady crowd took in the annual Cool Car Show, which was hosted by Bethany Meadows/Bethany Home in Brandon on Aug. 23. Unexpected rain showers dampened the event about 6 p.m., forcing some folks and cars to depart earlier than planned.

Paul Froiland, of Brandon, dries off his 2016 Ford Mustang following a light rain during the Cool Car Show, which was hosted by Bethany Meadows/Bethany Home-Brandon on Aug. 23. This is the third red Mustang Froiland has owned. “It just goes out to play,” he said.
The sun was out and the crowd was there until light showers dampened the Cool Car Show – but not the spirit of the event - held on the grounds of Bethany Meadows/Bethany Home-Brandon on Aug. 23.
“The rain did put a little damper on the end of it,” said Carmen Dougherty, Bethany’s community development director. “We had upwards of over 200 people and had a nice array of cars.”
This was the third year that Curt Schar, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, cruised to the Cool Car Show with his prized possession, a 1926 Ford coupe hotrod.
“There’s no pressure at this show,” said Schar. “Most of the people here don’t go to shows.”
Schar caught up with fellow Rock Rapids resident, Wayne Feikema, who had his 1941 blue Chevy with purple flames that he’s owned since he was 13, at the show. The two were discussing what was under the hood of Dale and Joyce Aunt’s ’73 Buick, which had “only seen three sprinkles” since 1980 when Dale purchased the car for his wife to haul their kids to and from school.
Last week, was the car received its fourth “sprinkles.”
“It’s had a lot of TLC,” Aunt said.
Aunt said he purchased the car from a Beaver Creek, Minn., schoolteacher.
“She had a son and daughter who always wondered why she had a 455. Her husband said it was because she was always late for school,” he shared.
That wasn’t the case for the Aunt’s children.
“The kids were never late for school,” offered his wife, adding that she’s never had a speeding ticket in her life.
Paul Froiland, of Brandon, had his 2016 Ford Mustang on display at Bethany last week.
“I don’t have any great stories to tell about it. I don’t do projects, I’m a turnkey kind of guy,” he said of the third red Mustang he’s owned. “It just goes out to play.”
He came to the Cool Car Show because it’s close to home and “it’s a zero-stress thing.”
He’s headed to Sturgis this week for the Sturgis Mustang Rally, an event he’s attended nine of the 11 years it’s been going on.
Like the Aunt’s Buick, Froiland said his candy-apple Mustang has some real zip.
“This thing’s pretty darn fast, but you pay to be stupid,” he said. “I’ve ‘maybe’ cracked a hundred a time or two.”
As they have in previous years, the senior living community partnered with the Siouxland Car Council and the Dakota Suede Band provided the music.
“It’s always nice when the Siouxland Car Council comes out here and gives us a chance to spotlight our community,” Dougherty said.
