From the Pulpit: Speak truth to power
It is a newish phrase we use to express that when we speak our truth we find our power. There is one person who speaks truth and it is very powerful, God. In Genesis God said, “Let there be light, and there was light.” In Ezekiel there is a valley of dry bones and the Lord tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones. He said, “O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” As he continued to prophesy to them, they came together, sinews and flesh came on the bones and breath entered them and they were alive. This is amazing. God’s word is so powerful that what He speaks happens.
Jesus is the Son of God and so His word, His truth is also powerful. When He heals, all He has to do is speak. Sometimes He doesn’t even have to be in the presence of the person needing healing. In Luke 7 Jesus is traveling to a centurion’s house to heal his servant but gets stopped by the centurion. As the centurion confesses his faith, Jesus says, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” Verse 10 says, “And when those who had been sent retuned to the house they found the servant well.”
He raised Lazarus from the dead by simply saying, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
In John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” His word is truth and that truth is powerful. What He says to you over and over is, “your sins are forgiven.” That is powerful truth that only He can do. And it is done in His words, just as God created light with His words so does He forgive you of all your sins. With those words of forgiveness, He raises us from death into eternal life. Jesus always speaks truth to power and it changes everyone’s life. Amen.
