From the Pulpit: God is in control (even in an election year)
There is nothing, absolutely nothing that is too big, too complex, or too powerful for God. Keep in mind, this is the very same God who made all that exists, from nothing, with only his words, in six days – that is the God who rules over all things, even today.
I’m not sure if you find that easy to remember, especially when our world appears like it is unraveling more and more every day. In full view, we see wars that have the potential to escalate; we see people who treat each other with anger and disrespect; we see rising violence in our midst; we see more and more people unable to afford the basics; things are not getting better.
In such a climate, worry almost seems second nature, like something that we will always live with – worry over our physical safety, worry over maintaining our way of life, worry over what the future could possibly hold.
Yet, at the heart of that worry is the inkling of a thought – maybe God isn’t as in control as I thought he was. At the heart of worry, is a lack of trust in God.
But, God’s Word has something to say to that. No matter what is happening, no matter how chaotic things seem, God is in control. Nothing, absolutely nothing is too big, too complex, or too powerful for him. And, despite the sin in this world, his good purposes will be accomplished (even if we can’t see how). You can trust that truth with 100 percent certainty.
During this election season, don’t forget this simple, yet amazingly comforting truth – the all-powerful, perfectly loving God is in control. No need to worry. Listen to these words from Psalm 46, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging… Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:1-3, 10)
