Pigskin golf draws 70 players

Seventy golfers turned out for the 17th Annual Pigskin Golf Classic on Saturday. The event drew golfers of all skill levels for a day of fun, fellowship and to support the mission of the Brandon Valley Booster Club: Lynx athletics.
Two of the 70 to hit the links of the Brandon Golf Course on Saturday were BVHS’s leadership, Principal Dr. Gregg Talcott and Mark Schlekeway, the assistant principal. It was evident the duo – part of a four-man team – had bought into the fun of the day as Talcott’s tee-off sailed far onto the fairway from the top of the famed number 10 hill.
“You were due,” Schlekeway jabbed.
“That’s a good line,” Talcott fired back. “Next to the unemployment line.”
Organizers said tournament numbers were down 28 from last year, and attribute the drop to the date change and summer busyness. The tournament was bumped up a week because of this week’s SDGA State Men’s and Women’s Stroke Play Tournament.
Following 18 holes of golf, players enjoyed Tony’s Catering’s famed pork loin sandwiches, fixings awards and donated prizes.
The 17th Annual Pigskin Classic is Saturday, Aug. 26. The day is filled with family and kid-centric activities, including a 5K walk/run, inflatables, cheer camp, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, dodgeball, kid’s tractor pedal pull, soccer and punt, pass and kick challenges, 5-6th grade Junior Football exhibition, a tailgate party, and, of course, football. At 7 p.m., the Lynx will host last year’s state championship rival, the Washington Warriors.
