Mary Lou Dickey, 82

Mary Lou Dickey, 82, died on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon. Her family will be present to greet friends at George Boom Funeral Home- Brandon Valley Chapel on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a Liturgical Wake Service at 4 p.m.

Mary Lou Small, daughter of John and Ethel Ann (Townsend) Small, was born Jan. 5, 1942 at Sioux City, Iowa. In 1958 she moved with her family to Sioux Falls, eventually settling in Brandon where she graduated from high school in 1958. Following high school Mary attended Stewart’s School of Hairstyling.

Mary was united in marriage with William “Bill” Harold Dickey on Sept. 5, 1964 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Following their marriage, the couple lived in various places while Bill was in the military. Following Bill’s honorable discharge, the couple moved to Sioux Falls eventually moving to Brandon in 1971. Together they raised their family and in 1985 purchased the flower shop in Brandon from Virginia Peterson renaming it Mary’s Floral Boutique. Bill and Mary operated the shop until selling it in 1993. Mary then worked as a daycare provider for several daycares including Youth Enrichment Services before retiring. 

Mary was an active member of Risen Savior Catholic Church; loved to travel and volunteer with the National Kidney Foundation; and was a huge Brandon Valley athletics supporter.  

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, William H. Dickey, Brandon; her children, Lori (David) Johnson, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Bill (Sharolyn) Dickey, Emmetsburg, Iowa; Gene Dickey, Sioux Falls; and one brother, Richard (Weeta Wilson) Small, Rocky Mountain, Va. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Bonnie Elser, Dorothy Small, and John Small.
