Marty Mertens, 53

Marty John Mertens was born on March 18, 1972 in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Hugo Joseph Mertens and Carol Jean (Fleisher) Mertens. He died Friday, March 21, 2025 in Columbia, Tenn., at the early age of 53.

Marty was a jack of all trades, often found in his shop working on his many “projects.” He was a dedicated Maintenance Manager at CBC Group where he had the opportunity to travel the country and earned his CDL during his tenure. He also spent his early career working for Willow Run Golf Course and Mueller Pallets, where he made an immense impact for many years.

His greatest pride and joy, though, was his girls. He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Tanya Marie (Miller) Mertens on Aug. 26. For 25 years, they raised three beautiful girls together hand in hand: Ashley Sue Mertens, Katlyn Roberta Mertens, and Emma Jean Mertens. He was always so proud of his girls and the strong family that they all created. Their love is one to be remembered by all, forever.

He was a simple man who always wore a smile and knew how to make anyone laugh. The love and light he brought to every room will forever be missed by all who love and were loved by him. There will always be someone missing when we play cards, go hunting or fishing, and step onto the floors of his shop he dreamed and worked so hard for. He was truly special, and we all feel lucky to have known him and have endless memories to cherish in the years to come. There was nothing more important to him than his family and creating fun moments with all those around him. Marty was a truly amazing man who was as real and as good as they come.

Marty’s service will be held Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Bills-McGaugh & Hamilton Funeral Home in Lewisburg, Tenn. The family visitation doors will open at 4 p.m. with the service beginning at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Please come as you are in something comfortable. Marty would not want it any other way.

Bills-McGaugh & Hamilton Funeral Home is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
