Brandon Valley lit up the scoreboard in every quarter of Friday’s homecoming tilt against cross-state Rapid City Central and the end result was a lopsided 55-23 victory for the Lynx
Once again, Braiden Petersen had a big game on foot, rushing for 193 yards and four touchdowns.
“Braiden will tell you that his offensive line did a great job tonight and gave him some big holes,” Lynx head coach Chad Garrow said. “Once we figured out what they were trying to do – they were really keying a lot on our fullback on Cade (Terveer) as the lead blocker and stuff – so once we moved him away from where we were going to run the ball, then Braiden had a lot of open area to run the ball.”
Petersen, however, wasn’t Central’s only problem, as the Lynx utilized four other avenues into the end zone that included Micah McGee’s 52-yard pick six TD, a pair of Thomas Scholten to Cole Siegried TD passes, and a 51-yard kickoff return for a score by Carter Olthoff.
The Cobblers made things interesting from the get-go, taking the ball the distance on their first play from scrimmage. The celebration from Central’s side of the field was short-lived when the play was called back on an ineligible player downfield penalty.
“It was big for them to have the penalty right away. I mean, they got us right away with a big play and then had to bring it back,” Garrow said.
The first of Petersen’s four scores on the night came on a six-play, 21-yard drive. Jorey Sorenson’s follow-up PAT kick was good for the early 7-0 lead.
Central put seven points on the board when Tate Remmers capped off an 11-play, 75-yard drive from eight yards out to make it 7-7 with 2:57 to play in the first.
BV answered back 23 seconds later when Scholten hooked up with a wide-open Siegfried on a 75-yard pass play to regain lead, 14-7.
The Lynx padded their lead with four more scores in the second quarter. The first was a 33-yard scamper and end zone dive by Petersen at 10:03.
BV next took advantage of the short-field opportunity created by Terveer, who got a hand on a Central punt. Starting at the 15-yard line, on third and five, Scholten hit Siegfried on a 10-yard pass play for a 21-7 advantage with 6:26 to play.
McGee and the Lynx defense were responsible for the third TD of the quarter. The BV junior picked off Holden Jackson’s pass at the Lynx 48 and hauled it 52 yards with 4:33 to go in the half.
Late in the first half, the Lynx took advantage of another Central miscue, this time a fumble, and put the ball back in Petersen’s hands. The Lynx senior zig-zagged his way to end zone to make it a 41-7 game with 1:35 to play.
With six seconds to go in the half, the Cobblers scored on a three-yard Isaac Holden run.
Petersen hit pay dirt for his fourth and final time of the night with 9:39 to play in the third. This score came on a 64-yard scamper to make it a 48-15 game.
Both teams scored once more in the fourth. Central’s Jaleel Snipes took it in from a yard out, and BV’s Olthoff wrapped up the scoring with a 51-yard kickoff return.
The Lynx dominated the stats, registering 343 total yards to Central’s 295. Scholten, who passed for 151 yards (7-11, 2 TDs), was intercepted once. Siegfried latched onto three of Scholten’s passes for two TDS and
