The long haul to Aberdeen Central Friday night was well worth the trip, as Coach Chad Garrow and the now 2-1 Brandon Valley Lynx came home with a 41-0 victory.
For the second consecutive week, the Lynx utilized Braiden Petersen’s blazing speed, and once again the senior responded in a big way, racking up 199 yards en route to scoring four rushing TDs.
The ground game, however, wasn’t Brandon Valley’s only scoring attack, as sophomore quarterback Thomas Scholten found scoring targets in Carter Olthoff and Cade Terveer.
“After the first couple of series, we got things going offensively. We were able to run the ball pretty good, went down and scored,” Garrow said.
BV’s initial score came on a 2-yard Petersen run. Although the ensuing kick failed, the Lynx held the 6-0 advantage with 1:47 to play in the first.
BV’s passing game came into play in the second quarter. Scholten first hooked up with Olthoff on a 15-yard pass play, and the QB ran in the 2-point conversion. With 10:44 to go in the half, BV was up 14-0.
Nearly six minutes later, Scholten hit Terveer on a 10-yard pass play, and Jorey Sorenson’s PAT kick was good to give the Lynx a 21-0 advantage with 4:41 to play.
Unlike the previous week when the Lynx watched their sizeable lead dwindle, Garrow said his team came out even stronger.
“We came out offensively and did a great job, and defensively, we stopped them right away and then scored right away,” he said. “Aberdeen just didn’t have a lot.”
The Lynx went back to Petersen in the third quarter, and once again, he didn’t disappoint. Finding openings and fending off an assortment of Central tacklers along the way, he scored on subsequent runs of 1, 59 and 2 yards.
The Lynx registered 309 yards rushing in 44 carries, of which Petersen had 25 carries for 199 yards. Scholten completed 7-14 passes and was intercepted twice. Although Central’s defense held the Lynx to just 60 passing yards, Scholten (5-9 for 51 yards) picked up 35 of those yards in the second quarter.
Central was held to 31 yards rushing in 22 tries. The Eagles were a bit more productive in the air, picking up 71 yards in Triston Brown’s 8-for-20 passing. He was also intercepted twice. Preston Barr had 19 yards on the ground for Aberdeen Central. Chris Weber had two fourth quarter carries for 15 yards. Brock Baker and Mason Flakus combined for six catches for 56 yards.
Andrew Hanson’s 12 tackles led the Lynx defense.
The Class 11AAA No. 4 Lynx host Rapid City Central - also sporting a 2-1 record - in Friday’s homecoming tilt that kicks off at 7 p.m.
“I’m glad coronation is Monday, then we can focus on the game the rest of the week,” Garrow said.
This week, Garrow said the Lynx need to expect the unexpected.
“They run a little different offense, a lot of misdirection and different things like that,” he said. “So defensively, we’ve got to be very disciplined … We’ll need to get the defense ready because it’s hard to replicate something like that.”
On the defensive side the ball, Garrow said the Cobblers are prone to the blitz.
“Typically, we can get some big plays out of that. You win some and you lose some, but that’s the type of defense they play.”
