Brandon Valley’s late-round hiccups landed the Lynx boys’ golf team a third-place finish at Saturday’s Eastern South Dakota Conference meet. The league meet was played at Lakeview Country Club in Mitchell, where the Yankton Bucks edged Harrisburg by five strokes to win the 2020 ESD title, 305-310.
The Lynx slid into third place behind their 324-team tally.
BV, making a strong showing, had its chances and was two shots out of the lead with four holes to play.
Standing in their way was a tough par 5, 15th hole and a tight par 4, 16th hole.
“They created some problems and we ended up giving back some strokes to the field,” said BV head coach Todd Geerdes.
BV senior Emmet Hansen carded a 5-over-par 77 to finish in a three-way tie for third, and underclassmen Owen Sanders posted a 79, which earned him a slot in a three-way tie for ninth.
Nick Hokenstad planted an 82, which was good enough for 18th place. Rounding out the Lynx scores were Logan Kelling, who carded an 86 to tie for 25th, and Jace Christoffer’s 90 put him in a tie for 32nd.
Geerdes said he’s proud of the progress his team has made heading into next week’s state tournament.
“We have been working hard on course management, chipping, putting, and it’s starting to pay off with our scoring,” he said. “If we can eliminate our penalty area/out of bounds strokes, which leads to two to three bad holes per round, we can be right there contending for a podium finish on Oct. 5 and 6 at the state meet at Willow Run in Sioux Falls.”
Yankton’s Henry Homstad carded a 2-over-par 75 to win the 2020 ESD medalist honors. A trio of golfers – Harrisburg’s Will Allen and Tyson Kogel and Yankton’s Landon Moe – all shot 3-over-par 75s to tie for second place.
The state tournament gets underway at 9 a.m. both Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6 at Willow Run in Sioux Falls.
