Lynx fall to no. 2 Kernels

Just as the Lady Lynx volleyball team was beginning to make strides in turning their 1-9 season around, along came the No. 2-ranked Mitchell Kernels (12-1) to remind them that there’s still work to be done. In the sweltering Mitchell High School gym on Sept. 21, the Kernels dealt Brandon Valley a three-set blow, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. 

BV head coach Dacia Boehrns said her team continues to work to improve their game. 

“We’re trying to improve on our side of the net, only worrying about us and what we do on our side of the court,” she said. “The girls are staying positive, which makes it enjoyable to coach them and one of these times, the hard work’s going to pay off for us.”

The two ESD Conference squads played close for most of the first set before the Kernels went into attack mode.

Mitchell’s serving game was also an issue for the Lynx, as Miller and Sage Jorgensen, who had a trio of ace serves on the night, were factors in BV’s second set loss.

“They serve really aggressive and that’s one of the areas we’ve struggled in is our serve receive, and when you have that, it makes it tough,” Boehrns said.

Mitchell continued to burn BV from the service line in the third set. 

Paige Timmons paced the Lynx with eight kills and Abby Risty had four. Avery Myers produced 16 assists. Timmons and Macyn Flanigan each had three blocks, Ella Simonson had five digs and Brooke Lunstra accounted for a pair of ace serves for BV.

For Mitchell, Miller had 16 kills and eight digs, with Jorgensen posting eight kills and three aces. Brewster had seven kills, nine digs and two aces. Carly Haring had three blocks to lead Mitchell and Schmidt had 25 set assists.

BV travels to O’Gorman Thursday and hosts Watertown at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday. On Oct. 3, the Lady Lynx will play a 7 p.m. road match at Yankton.
