Stingy defense was a key factor that led Brandon Valley to a 35-17 victory over Rapid City Stevens in the first round of the Class 11AAA playoffs on Oct 26. The Lynx defense was front and center, containing the Raiders to 113 total yards on offense – five of which came on the ground – and intercepted a pair of passes for scores in the second half.
Jesse Steffel picked off a 35-yard TD interception early in the third quarter and Cole Jensen latched onto a 42-yard TD interception early in the fourth.
“I wouldn’t consider it a great offensive night,” Lynx head coach Chad Garrow said. “In the second-half, defensively, we did a lot of great things right away and it seemed like our offense got a little bit stagnant.”
BV lit up the board three times in the first half, turning to senior running back Braiden Petersen to get the job done. Petersen stormed into the end zone on runs of 49, 15 and five yards.
The Lynx got off to a shaky start, giving the Raiders the ball in BV’s red zone on a short punt. Fortunately, the Lynx defense – highlighted by a Cade Terveer quarterback sack – held strong, forcing Rapid City to settle for a field goal attempt that sailed wide of the uprights.
The Lynx put the ball in Petersen’s hands after the defense caused Stevens to fumble at the 49-yard line, and the senior raced to the end zone for the 6-0 score with 5:07 to play in the first quarter. Less than four minutes later, Petersen hauled it in from 15 yards out, and Ty McCann’s PAT pass to Cole Siegried was good to make it a 14-0 game.
Petersen’s final score of the game – a 15-yard run - came with 8:55 on the clock. Jorey Sorenson’s follow-up extra-point kick was good to give the Lynx the 21-0 advantage.
The Lynx defense added two scores to the tally. The first came when Steffel returned a Raider-intended pass 35 yards with 11:05 to play in the third quarter. Jensen capped off BV’s scoring on a 43-yard interception with 11:07 to play in the fourth to put the Lynx up, 35-0.
The Raiders scored all 17 of their points after that, both coming off a pair of screen passes for touchdowns to Jamin Wurtz and a 40-yard field goal from Corben Mahaffy for the 35-17 ending.
“We didn’t give them much until the end,” said Garrow, whose first string was sidelined for much of the fourth quarter.
The Lynx clearly out-played Stevens on both sides of the ball, racking up 241 yards on offense. Petersen led the rushing game with 169 yards in 28 carries and a trio of scores. Ethan Tellinghuisen accounted for 40 yards.
Back-up quarterback Ty McCann completed 7-11 for 71 yards. Carter Olthoff caught two for 16 yards, while Peterson grabbed a pair for 14 yards. Siegfried and Terveer each had a catch for 21 and 18 yards, respectively.
For Stevens, Norman completed 6-12 for 100 yards and two TDs. Wurtz rushed for 89 yards and two scores in his three receptions.
Andrew Hanson was credited with eight tackles, while Noah Hofer, Sam Krohnke and Tanner Niewenhuis all had four; Hofer also had a QB sack to his credit.
BV’s post-season win – its fifth consecutive - sets the stage for a repeat meeting with Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Howard Wood Field. The Rough Riders defeated Watertown 30-16 to advance to Friday’s semifinal clash with the Lynx.
In BV’s first meeting with Roosevelt, Petersen was contained to 106 yards in 28 carries, and no scores.
BV’s starting QB, Thomas Scholten, is also expected to return to his role this week. Scholten was first sidelined by injury during the late-September game where he completed 20-of-33 passes for 250 yards. He was reinjured during the first half of the O’Gorman game and watched McCann from the sidelines pass for 108 yards.
