Letters to the Editor - White: Research reveals the facts

After looking into our House Legislative choices, some inconsistencies arose that I decided to research further. First off, candidate Dawn Hill sent a postcard saying she has ‘deep South Dakota roots,’ even though I’ve never heard of her and neither have any of my friends or neighbors. So, I decided to pull her voter registration record from the Minnehaha County election office. Hill first registered to vote in South Dakota as a Democrat in October 2022, with a previous address of Clinton Township, Mich. Hill changed her registration to Republican in September 2025. Hill now resides in East Sioux Falls. Voting records show that Hill has only voted in the 2024 General Election, despite having registered to vote in time for the 2022 General Election.

Secondly, a neighbor told me that candidate Brandon Lane’s ad in the newspaper where he claims to be a ‘Brandon resident’ is not true.  His voter registration records indeed show that he has lived in Valley Springs since May 2023. The records also show that Lane was a registered Republican from October 2008 to March 2019. In March 2019 he changed his party to Independent. He switched back to Republican in March 2024. Voting records show that since 2018, Lane has only voted in the 2024 Primary and 2024 General elections.

While I was at it, I decided to look into the other candidates as well.

Adam Long first registered as a Republican in February 2006. He has not changed his party affiliation. Long lives in East Sioux Falls. Since 2018, Long has voted in the 2018 General, 2020 General, 2022 Primary, 2022 General, 2024 Primary, and 2024 General elections.

Manuel Luschas registered to vote in South Dakota in October 2020, with a previous address of Sunnyvale, Calif. Luschas lives in Brandon. He has not changed his party affiliation or address. Since 2018, Luschas has voted in the 2020 General, 2022 Primary, 2022 General, 2024 Primary, and 2024 General elections.

Personally, I’m not excited about voting for candidates who outright lie or mislead voters. I also question why someone would want to run for a Legislative position when they don’t have a history of showing up to vote.
