Laying down the law: BV junior sets FT record against SFW

The Lady Lynx made it three in a row Dec. 19, taking down Metro Conference rival - Sioux Falls Washington – 68-58. And in the process, Brandon Valley junior scoring phenom, Trinity Law, set a new school record with a blazing 13-for-13 free throw performance, finishing the night with 32 points, nearly half of the team’s 68 points. Law’s name now replaces Shelly Allen’s in the school record books, who was perfect from the line (11-for-11) in 1979.
“This was a good team win on the road for our kids,” Lynx head coach Mark Stadem said. “Washington is a really good team. They have played some very good teams early, so their record (0-4) is very misleading.”
While it was Law who spent most of the time at the free throw line, as a team, the Lady Lynx capitalized on 23 of their 29 opportunities.
“We did a great job hitting our free throws down the stretch,” Stadem said. “That is always a big key in tight ball games.”
The Warriors kept pace with the Lynx in the first stanza - 11-9 - BV’s favor, but it was the second quarter where the Lynx – and Law – kicked it into high gear. BV out-scored their hosts 21-14, boosting their half-time lead to nine, 32-23.
The Warriors stepped up their offensive production in the second half, dropping in 17 points in the third and 18 in the fourth. The Lynx, however, kept them at bay with their 16- and 20-point second-half efforts.
“We had a lot of players step up and contribute,” Stadem said. “They made a run at us in the fourth quarter, and we expected it, but the girls made enough plays to maintain the lead.”
In addition to Law’s 32 counters and four of the team’s 10 total assists, junior Danica Kocer netted 19 points and two steals. Felicity Klinkhammer tossed in five points and had a trio of BV’s 13 total steals to her credit. Sam Taylor contributed two assists, two steals and two blocked shots to the victory, and Lexi Ellingson picked off a pair of steals.
BV turned the ball over 15 times.
No stats for Washington were available.
The Lady Lynx return to action Jan. 2 when they travel to face one of Class AA’s powerhouses, the Harrisburg Tigers.
