The Brandon Valley girls soccer team came another step closer to securing a state championship and another first for the Lady Lynx soccer program Saturday, beating Spearfish 2-0 in overtime of the state quarterfinals.
The win was the Lady Lynx’s first playoff victory in program history and gives the team the opportunity to host O’Gorman in the state semifinal Oct. 3. O’G defeated BV on a rainy night in the team’s second game of the season.
Saturday’s win was the ninth straight for the Lynx, who got off to a rocky 1-4 season start.
BV out-shot Spearfish almost four to one, sending 25 shots at the Spartan goal, compared to just four from Spearfish.
“I was happy with the way that we played even though the halftime score was tied at 0-0. I knew that if we just kept getting after it, that eventually goals would fall for us,” said BV coach Jacob Shoup.
Despite hitting the goal post half a dozen times in the second half, the Lynx battled until the final whistle but came up scoreless to force an overtime session.
The Lynx came out firing on all cylinders and scored in the opening minutes of OT on a shot off the foot of Bre Langenhorst on an assist by Mya Chan.
It was security, but BV couldn’t let up; Spearfish rallied back the same way just days before, scoring at the end of a second overtime to force a shootout against SF Lincoln.
The Lynx gained an insurance goal with about five minutes to play  from freshman Julie Kreutner on an assist by fellow freshman Sage Bultje.
“I give lots of credit to Spearfish, who looked like a completely different team against us than they did against Lincoln,” Shoup said. “They fought until the end and made everything we did feel difficult.”
