Games one and two against the Yankton Gazelles on the volleyball court Sept. 7, simply put, weren’t pretty.
Plagued with missed serves and miscues, the Gazelles made fast work of their hosts, resulting in 25-11 and 25-17 setbacks.
And then came game three, and Brandon Valley volleyball fans finally got a glimpse of the team they’ve been waiting to see come to life since their first match of the season against Washington. BV, unfortunately, came out on the downside of the 25-23 battle.
“That’s the most fight I think I’ve seen in them since our win against Washington,” head coach Dacia Boehrns said. “We really came together, and I think the fans and myself, we wanted that game. Unfortunately, it ended on a kind of a questionable call, which you never want to have happen – somebody else decides the point. But there’s nothing we can do about it now. We just have to build going into to tomorrow’s practice and then Harrisburg on Saturday.”
Game three was certainly an exciting one, as Brandon Valley found the momentum they’ve been trying to muster in recent matches and took advantage of Yankton’s miscued serves and hitting errors, which gave the Lynx student fan section something to really cheer about.
Boehrns credits the upswing in play to a switch in the lineup.
“We made some lineup changes and so forth and put some people in different positions trying to find the right combinations,” she said. “We saw some glimmers of good things tonight, so we’re just going to keep working and building from here.”
Paige Timmons led the Lynx with 12 kills. Timmons, along with Macyn Flanigan each had two solo blocks. Avery Myers put up 43 set assists.
Megan Stettnichs led the defense with seven digs. Serve receive was led by Felicity Klinkhammer and Ella Simonson, who handled 11 and 10, respectively.
Katie Budig led the Gazelles with 12 kills. Maddy Hochstein had eight. Cameryn Specht provided 25 sets and 11 digs.
In sub-varsity action, BV won the JV match 25-16, 25-13. Yankton won the sophomore match 25-21, 25-22. BV won the freshman ‘A’ match 25-17, 25-13. Yankton won the freshman ‘B’ match 25-22, 25-23.
BV 0, Harrisburg 3
Class AA’s reigning champs, the Harrisburg Tigers, continued their dominance on the volleyball court, and on Saturday handled the visiting Lady Lynx in three straight sets. The Tigers won 25-8, 25-18, 25-14.
In the match, Timmons had eight kills. Myers provided 28 set assists, and Flanigan had a solo ace serve. Simonson was credited with eight digs and Klinkhammer had four. Jadah Tschetter posted a pair of blocks.
A trio of Tigers did their damage at the net. Madison Wassink led the attack with 13 kills, while Carlie Fikse and Ashlee Cain had nine and eight, respectively. Wassink also had four ace serves in the win.
BV (1-6) continues their ESD Conference schedule on Thursday when they host Brookings at 7 p.m. and travel to Aberdeen Central this Saturday.
