Mara Nelson tees off at the Brookings Invitational last week. The Lady Lynx golf season continues into June, when they return to Brookings to play in the AA state tourney.
“They are learning so much match by match.”
Those are the words of Brandon Valley girls’ golf coach Craig Nelson, as he summarizes how the Lady Lynx fared at the 15-team Bill Scholten Invitational played Thursday at the Brookings Country Club.
The invite was somewhat of a warm-up to the 2022 South Dakota State Class AA Championships in early June, where the tournament will be played.
Aberdeen Central ran away with the team title, racking up 322 points. O’Gorman and Mitchell both posted 333’s, followed by Harrisburg (334) and Rapid City Stevens (339).
The Lady Lynx posted a team score of 414.
Lady Lynx juniors Megan Erkonen and Mara Nelson both carded a 97 to tie for 37th place. Ella Kluver’s 107 landed her in a tie for 55th place, and Allison Ebbing and Sarah Krogman both shot a 113 to tie for 58th place.
“This game takes a long time to figure it out and many of them are still just in the early stages and have a lot of development left,” Nelson said of his relatively inexperienced squad. “They are giving it all they’ve got every practice, and really, we’re focusing and working to improve.”
Nelson said the next step is to “cut some strokes down with our chipping and putting.
“We need to get more ‘up and downs’ (one chip and one putt). Overall, we just need to improve our short game. I think we have girls that can cut five strokes off in the last two weeks of the season just with a little extra focus on the putting green,” he said.
Following Tuesday’s run at the ESD Conference Invite, the Lynx head to Bakker Crossing in Sioux Falls for the Metro Conference Championships.
