The Lady Lynx didn’t have the start to their 2017 season they had hoped for, as the Pierre Governors left town with a 1-0 ESD Conference victory following their Aug. 11 meeting at the McHardy Park Soccer Complex.
Brandon Valley took four shots on goal, while Pierre fired 10 shots at the Lynx goal.
Abby Bastian, the goalie for the Lynx, had nine saves and a solo corner kick.
Pierre’s goalie registered four saves and had a trio of corner kicks to her credit.
“We lost in a great defensive battle,” said BV head coach Jacob Shoup.
Pierre, Shoup said, scored off a great shot on a free kick about 20 yards out by Joanna Zanin.
“Defensively, we knew we needed to be tough because they boast one of the most powerful offensive attacks in the state through Joanna,” Shoup said. “Our back four and mids did a fantastic job at limiting their chances throughout the game. We shut them down other than that free kick.”
The Lynx didn’t give the Lady Govs many other chances to score. Arianna Stangohr guarded Zanin the entire game, Shoup noted.
“She was all over her and played fantastic! Abby Bastian, who is a sophomore starting in her first game for Kianna Thelen, who was injured, also did a great job. She made some fantastic saves and played with great confidence,” he said.
The varisty girls host the Mitchell Kernels next on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. at the McHardy Park Soccer Complex.
