Kelley transforms pandemic isolation into 4,000-mile journey of faith in new documentary

Retired nurse, author, and photographer Lonnette Kelley has announced the upcoming release of her new faith-based documentary, Joy in the Heartland: Life-Changing Road Trips Through God’s Healing Fields of South Dakota. The film takes viewers on an uplifting tour across 51 unique communities in southeastern South Dakota, capturing local history, landmarks, and resilience through a lens of quiet faith.

Rooted in true events from 2020, the narrative follows two “at-risk” seniors who fought pandemic isolation and uncertainty by hitting the open road. Over the course of their journey, they covered more than 4,000 miles across rural landscapes, leaning on mutual support and spiritual reflection to find healing.

On-screen, this journey unfolds across 10 meticulously mapped regional trails, including the Old West Trail, Ageless Prairie Trail, and Sioux Valley Trail. Backed by vibrant drone footage and personal photography, the film highlights local murals, sculptures, and small-town character.

The documentary also features the “51 Hearts Initiative.” Moved by the community warmth they encountered, Kelley gifted a physical, red wooden heart to 51 different towns within a 50-mile radius of Sioux Falls. Local community leaders placed these hearts on historical landmarks, town buildings, or public trees to serve as lasting symbols of hope and a map for future travelers.

“This region has a quiet beauty, warmth, and faith that deserves to be seen,” says Kelley. “We wanted to share how simple nature and a change of scenery can bring genuine peace during difficult times.”

The film serves as a visual extension of Kelley’s faith-based travel memoir of the same name, which is currently available on Amazon and locally at Crossroads in Sioux Falls.
