Journal Editorial: Small actions today can save lives tomorrow

In just a few days, National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 5-11) will be celebrated across the nation in a multitude of ways.

Here in Brandon, the celebration includes Sunday’s annual Pancake Breakfast. While the event serves as an avenue to raise funds for the all-volunteer organization, more importantly, it raises awareness of the selfless service they provide to keep our community safe.

But fire safety is not a just a one-week event: it’s a year-round commitment. And here’s why.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires claim thousands of lives each year, and many of these tragedies are preventable. Fires spread quickly, leaving little time to react. That’s why preparation is key.

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Taking simple steps, like routinely testing smoke alarms and having a fire escape plan in place can make all the difference in an emergency.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” works to educate everyone about using these batters safely. The campaign stresses the importance of BUY, CHARGE and RECYCLE safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.

BUY only listed products. When purchasing a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL. ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.

CHARGE devices safely. Always use cords that came with the product to charge and follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Charge devices on a hard surface, but do not overcharge them. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.

Finally, RECYCLE batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they can start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location.

Fire prevention starts with you. So, please, take a few moments this week to test smoke alarms, review your fire escape plan and talk to your family about fire safety.

These small actions today can save lives tomorrow.
