Jill's Journal: Pages and pages of problems ...

There are some problems in the newspaper business that you can plan for. A late meeting. A last-minute breaking news story. A photo that mysteriously disappears from the computer just moments before deadline.

And then there is this week.

This week, our problem was pages. Too many pages.

Or, more accurately, not enough content for the number of pages we had planned balanced with not enough ads.

Now, before anyone starts feeling sorry for us, please understand that this is actually a pretty good problem to have. There are certainly worse things than having too many stories, photos, and community happenings competing for space in the pages of your hometown newspaper.

Still, somewhere between planning this week’s issue and laying it out, I apparently developed an appetite for pages. And more pages.

And, just when I thought we had everything figured out, Tuesday morning arrived. It was past the midway point of layout that I made the decision to pull two pages.

Two pages. Gone. Poof. Just like that.

I’m here to tell you that pulling two pages from a newspaper that is already full is a little like deciding your suitcase is too heavy after you’ve packed everything you need for a two-week vacation. Something has to go.

Unfortunately, in this case, that something turned out to be hundreds of photos from Saturday’s Pigskin Classic.

And when I say hundreds, I mean hundreds.

There were football photos. Band photos. Cheerleader photos. Crowd photos.  Photos of students. Photos of families.  Photos of fans. Photos of people who may not have even realized I was taking their picture until they saw a camera pointed in their general direction.

Saturday’s Pigskin Classic was one of those events where you take a few pictures, then a few more pictures.

I had grand plans.

The photos were going to be part of this week’s issue.

Then Tuesday happened. I’ll blame it on the holiday weekend. And two pages disappeared.

The good news is that the photos haven’t disappeared. They simply found a new home. Actually, hundreds of them have.

And, frankly, this may be better than trying to squeeze them onto newspaper pages anyway.

On the website, we don’t have to pull two pages. We don’t have to rearrange five other stories.  We don’t have to ask a photo to politely move over because another photo needs just a little more room. We don’t have to measure columns, count inches or stare at the computer screen wondering how something that looked perfectly fine five minutes ago suddenly no longer fits.

The Internet, fortunately, has a lot more room.

So, if you were hoping to see yourself, your child, your favorite football player, marching band member or friend in this week’s paper, don’t worry.
