Jill's Journal: The disappearing cupcakes

I blame Mary Oren.
Well, more so, I blame the yummy cupcakes that Mary offers through her home-based business, Mary’s Cakes.
Chocolate, peanut butter, carrot cake, caramel, salted peanut, red velvet … and the list of her mouth-watering temptations goes on and on and on.
They’re kind of like Christmas cookies. When you know they’re there for the taking, you take them – and you eat them.
And that’s sort of – well, actually – that’s exactly what happened over the last few months. Earlier this year when the Journal hosted our ribbon cutting, a variety of Mary’s mouth-watering cupcakes were one of the highlights of the lunch buffet we served our invited guests. Which flavors to choose wasn’t an easy decision, so I made the executive decision of choosing the flavors I like best, for leftover purposes, of course.
While we had a great crowd join us in our ribbon cutting festivities, I’ll admit I was bit excited that nearly a dozen cupcakes were leftover. After the staff and I enjoyed them for a few days, I took the leftovers home, plunked them in a container and hid them away in the freezer for the staff and I to enjoy another day.
For weeks, the cupcakes sat idle in my freezer. I didn’t think about them nor did I even look at the container when I went to the freezer, that was until one evening when I had a hankering for something a little sweet.
With little to choose from in the cupboards or the refrigerator, I remembered the cupcakes.
“Just one,” I told myself as I guiltily surveyed my choices.
I only scavenged one from the container - that night.
And then came subsequent cravings for “something a little sweet.” One by one, the dozen or so cupcakes I had taken home for safe keeping in the freezer and future consuming, had dwindled and eventually, disappeared altogether.
I’m sorry. But they were good – too good – for safe keeping.
I haven’t broken the news to the staff just yet that the leftover cupcakes we had all so salivated over earlier this year, won’t be making a return appearance at the office. With the usual “I’m going to lose weight” New Year’s resolutions just around the corner, I’m guessing now may be as good of time as any to fess up.
Happy New Year … and I’ll see you on the treadmill!
