BV closes out year in thrilling 41-40 double OT loss

You can’t script endings like the one that unfolded Friday night at Howard Wood Field.
The 11AAA semifinal clash featured two teams determined to keep their seasons alive to play one more game: the all-important championship game.
But as life would have it, only one team can move on, and unfortunately, in this play for play, yard for yard, score for score game, the nail-biting, double overtime 41-40 ending went the way of the Roosevelt Rough Riders.
“It’s hard,” Lynx head coach Chad Garrow said as he gathered his thoughts moments after the post-game team huddle. “We had really thought about going for two there. Jorey’s (Sorenson) young, and that’s a lot of pressure on a kid like that, so I thought about going for two, but you don’t know and you can second guess yourself all the time.”
The “two” Garrow mentions refers to is the game-tying extra point in the second overtime that would have punched Brandon Valley’s ticket to the DakotaDome rather than Roosevelt’s. Unfortunately, BV’s season came to a close when the extra point kick sailed wide of the goal posts.
“We’ll look back on the game and there will be a lot of different things, where we’ll say, ‘We could have done that better’ or ‘we could have done this better,’ just things like that. But the thing is, the kids played hard and gave it their all,” he said.
The high-scoring affair featured two very different offenses, Roosevelt’s highly fueled by the passing the game, and BV’s, which was a balanced attack of the two. Carter Lohr, the senior QB for Roosevelt, threw for 264 yards (completing 15 of 23) and five touchdowns, while BV racked up 163 yards on the ground and 221 in the air.
While the Lynx struck first in the first overtime session on a Braiden Petersen 3-yard TD run, followed by Soren’s PAT kick, Roosevelt answered back on their try when Lohr put the ball in Nick Hoekstra’s hand on a 9-yard TD strike. Their ensuing kick was good as well, forcing a second OT.
The Riders got the ball first this time, and once again Lohr dished off a pass to Tyler Feldkamp. Chris Kirschman follow-up kick was good, putting the pressure on the Lynx.
BV needed just one play, this time a TD pass from Thomas Scholten to Cade Terveer, but BV’s season came to a screeching halt when the extra-point attempt sailed wide right.
Following a two-game absence, Scholten returned to the lineup, throwing for 221 yards in his 12-of-18 completions and four scores. Carter Olthoff was his go-to target Friday, latching on to five for 111 yards and two scores. Terveer and Cole Siegfriend each had two catches for 21 and 12 yards, respectively, and a TD.
Roosevelt keyed in on Petersen, limiting the senior back to 161 yards in 39 carries and two TDs.
Although Roosevelt had BV’s number on both meetings this season, Garrow felt his team dominated the Rough Riders on both occasions, but gave them a better fight this time
“I thought the first time we dominated, we just didn’t finish drives, and this time we finished drives and we did some good things,” he said. “I want them to know just how proud I am of them, especially the seniors and what they meant to this program and how they kept the winning going. Nobody gave us credit at the beginning of the season, and I don’t think anybody really thought we’d be in the top final four again, but here we are again, and every year they find a way to get back to this point, so it’s just unfortunate we didn’t make it back to the Dome.”
