After 11 years of teaching at Robert Bennis Elementary, Kristin Hofkamp is poised to fill the principal’s chair there this fall.
Hofkamp said she’ll miss the classroom – where she taught first grade for eight years and third grade for three years – but is excited about her new role.
“As a principal my goal is to help students be their best selves, both academically and emotionally. I plan to support the staff to make this goal a reality,” she said. “Even though I will miss teaching in a classroom, I look forward to building meaningful relationships with all of the RBE students and families.”
Hofkamp is taking over for former RBE principal Karen Heyden, whom she described as a mentor and inspiration.
“I love the culture she’s built here, and I plan to continue that. This building, this school – it’s a dream job for me. The students and staff are fantastic. I have some big shoes to fill,” Hofkamp said.
Born and raised in Sioux Falls, she graduated from Washington High School before going on to Augustana University to obtain her undergraduate degree in elementary education. In 2010 Hofkamp earned a master’s degree in administration from South Dakota State University.
In addition to spending time with her family – husband, Alex, and sons, 2-year-old Daniel and Michael, who’ll start kindergarten at RBE – Hofkamp likes to read and craft.
“When I’m not reading teaching or leadership books, I enjoy mysteries by James Patterson. I also enjoy traveling and being artistic. I’ve joined the rock painting craze,” she said.
The Hofkamps also have two dogs, Scooter and Oliver, and enjoy the outdoors, including the local fields where Michael plays T-ball.
A few fascinating facts about Hofkamp: She traveled to Nicaragua on a medical mission trip. She likes her soda at room temperature. She was an Augie cheerleader. Her grandma was a twin, and she married a twin.
She also holds a minor in special education and endorsement in middle school English and social studies.
