Milbank Firechiefs 5, Wynot (NE) Expos 3
A three-run top of the eighth opened things up for the Milbank Firechiefs as they advanced to the second round of the Class B tournament with a 5-3 win over the Expos of Wynot, Neb.
Taylor Boerger and Isaac Schulte each had two hits to lead Milbank (14-3). Tanner Hallquist’s double scored one in the eighth, Milbank’s only extra base hit of the day.
Wynot (11-11) scored once in the bottom of the eighth and once in the ninth to cut into the lead, but Dom Boerger shut things down on the mound. Boerger went the distance, struck out 12 and walked just two while giving up eight hits in the win.
Devin Lammers, Jaelen Wieseler and Michael Drotzman all doubled for Wynot. Landon Heimes finished with 2 RBI in the losing effort. Three Wynot pitchers combined to strike out nine, but Landon Wieseler picked up the loss after giving up two runs in the first and second. He left after three innings with Wynot trailing 2-1, but gave up just one hit but walked five.
Up next for Milbank is a second-round matchup against Kimball/White Lake at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 at First National Bank Field in Aspen Park in Brandon.
Kimball/White Lake Nationals 8, Groton Locke Electric 2
Kimball/White Lake were outhit by Groton in the opening round of the Class B tournament 10-9, but the Nationals cruised to a 8-2 Class B victory.
The Nationals got on the board in the third inning highlighted by an RBI double from Dylan Konechne. Konechne was 2-for-5 on the day and finished with a game-high 3 RBI. Dylanger Pierson was also 2-for-5 with 2 RBI in the win.
Mitchell Price went seven innings to pick up the win on the mound for Kimball/White Lake.
For Groton, Bradin Althoff led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, both on singles in the sixth and eighth inning.
Ryan Groeblinghoff pitched five innings for Groton but left with the Electric down 4-0. He struck out four with no walks.
Next up for Kimball/White Lake is a second-round matchup against Milbank at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 at First National Bank Field in Aspen Park in Brandon.
Clark Traders 6, Flandreau Blue Teal 3
A four-run fourth was enough for the Clark Traders to advance to the second round of the Class B tournament with a 6-3 win over Flandreau Blue Teal.
It was the second straight game in the tournament where the losing team out-hit the winners. Clark finished with just four hits in the win. Flandreau had five.
Bryce DesLauriers was 2-for-4 including a double for Clark’s only extra base hit. Clark’s two other hits, both singles, came from Grayson Foley and Braedon Zaug.
The loss is a tough one for Flandreau’s Tash Lunday, who went the distance for the Teal Blue, striking out six while giving up just the four hits.
While Lunday was dealing for Flandreau, Clark’s Hudson Fuler also went the distance and struck out two with zero walks in 9.0 innings and five hits.
Lunday led Flandreau at the plate, going 2-for-4. Although Emmot Nathan was 0-for-4 from the plate, he finished with 3 RBI after his ground ball was fumbled in the sixth and three runs scored on the error.
Next up for Clark is an Aug. 12 game at 5:30 p.m. against the Castlewood Ravens at First National Bank Field in Aspen Park in Brandon.
Castlewood Ravens 15, Crofton Bluejays 2
The Castlewood Ravens overwhelmed Crofton in their opening round Class B game. The Ravens opened a 9-0 lead after three innings and added six more in the bottom of the sixth to win 15-2. The game was shortened to seven innings because of the run rule.
Gus Steiger had a night to remember, going 2-for-3 with a 5 RBI that included two triples in the win. His triple in the third scored Aiden Stewart and Adam Ching to blow things open as Castlewood led 8-0.
That was just a start for Steiger. His triple in the sixth cleared the bases after he scored on an error, and the Ravens led 15-2.
Alex Gauer also had a big night, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, and Aidan Stewart and Ching also added 2 RBI.
While the Castlewood bats were hot, Gauer was solid on the mound. He pitched 6.0 innings and struck out four while giving up just one hit. Kellan Benck came in on relief and gave up just one hit as Crofton was stifled all night.
