A class like no other

BVHS seniors took part in the fun and games of Homecoming Week’s eventful Class Olympics.

Hooray! The time is finally here to celebrate Brandon Valley’s Class of 2020. Today is truly a milestone in these young individuals’ lives, and this milestone certainly didn’t happen without a few hiccups along the way.

So, first and foremost: Congratulations, Brandon Valley High School’s Class of 2020!

When the local history books are written, there will surely be a footnote when it comes to your milestone year.

BV’s Class of 2020 is a class that left school in March – two months before graduation – with no inkling that the school would be shut down for the remainder of their senior year. Instead, the Class of 2020 – and the student body from pre-kindergarten on up – have completed the school year through distance learning – and apart.

And that was no easy task for all involved, but you did it.

We will long remember BV’s Class of 2020 and the momentous events that have unfolded in your young lives. Many of the students were born around 9/11. They’ve never known a world without armed conflicts, famine and fires and flooding. They’ve graduated during a world-wide pandemic, will live during economic hard times caused by the virus and missed the opportunities of competing in athletics and fine arts and being together for the remaining months of their high school careers.

But in a world full of changes, with love and support from family, friends, teachers and administrators, and their communities, they have proved their resiliency. You’ve achieved success despite the adversity you’ve faced.

Graduates, in this year like no other, please know that now is the time you will begin to create your new story. While your dreams may have been altered, the end goal always remained the same: To graduate from high school.

Your futures are the next chapters in your lives, and there are many hurdles in life that you will face along the way. That’s a guarantee.

But don’t be afraid to take the leap over those hurdles. Climb the mountain. Swim the sea. Take the risk. Live life to the fullest – it goes fast. Strive to be better than the person you were yesterday. Live life with a joyous heart, a positive mind and no fear of what’s to come.

To the Class of 2020, your senior year has surely been “a year like no other.” Although there is nothing certain in your futures, please know that you have the opportunity to make the best of what is yet to come.

Once again, congratulations to this “class like no other.”
