BV boys shoot lights-out in 80-49 road win at Brookings

Brandon Valley hasn’t had the best luck in boys’ basketball at Brookings in recent years.

Friday night, that all changed.

On the hardwood of Bob Jostad Gymnasium, the Lynx (4-3, 4-2 ESD) finished with a “lights-out” 59.3 percent (32-of-54) from the field that included 13 3-pointers, en route to an 80-49 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory over the Bobcats (2-3, 2-3 ESD).

Head coach Brent Deckert said the Lynx secured the win by fulfilling their assigned roles, citing senior Caden Deckert, who came off the bench and drilled 5-of-8 treys for 15 points. 

“We’ve talked all year about how the best teams have role players that step up and make the most of their opportunities, and Caden really fulfilled that role at Brookings,” the coach said.

BV put up the first seven points of the game and led 20-9 after a quarter, before pushing the margin to 38-20 at the break. The Lynx shot a sizzling 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the second half, and after three quarters, held a commanding 59-37 lead. BV closed out the win with a 21-point fourth quarter, while Brookings managed a dozen.

Senior Cade Terveer and junior Evan Talcott also fulfilled their leadership roles Friday night. Terveer dropped in a game-high 23 points (5-of-5 3-pointers), grabbed six rebounds and dished out seven of the team’s 18 assists. Talcott netted 15 points and had seven boards.

“Cade and Evan have had outstanding years and some crazy, good games,” Deckert said. 

Carter Olthoff dropped in eight points and had three assists.

“When Carter attacks on offense, we become even a better team, and when we get contributions from role players we will always be difficult to beat,” Deckert said.

Senior Max Wilde, who Deckert said, “draws the best player on the other team,” picked off three of the team’s five steals and had three rebounds.

Also hauling in a trio of boards were Cole Siegfried and Alex Tietjen.

“Alex and Cole haven’t cracked the starting lineup yet,” Deckert said. “But both players bring us a big lineup that helps create some mismatches with many teams.

For Brookings, Riley Schafer had 14 points, Trevor Woodall 11 and Drew Cole 10. Josh Sell scored four points and had five rebounds. Seth Swedlund and Drew Cole both had four boards.

BV’s 11 turnovers were five fewer than the Bobcats’ 16.

“It was nice to see our guys get some well-deserved wins, especially with how hard we’ve been practicing. We’ll find out a ton about our team this week with three games in the next six days,” Deckert said. 

Following Tuesday’s home game against Sioux Falls Roosevelt, the Lynx hit the road for a pair of games this week. BV travels to Pierre Thursday and tips off against O’Gorman at 5 p.m. Saturday.
