Ten 3-pointers accounted for 30 of Brandon Valley’s game-winning 73 points Jan. 2 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, propelling the Lynx boys to a 73-57 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory.
Junior Evan Talcott shot lights-out from the perimeter, draining 5 of 11 to pad his season-high 26-point production.
“Evan had another great night in Mitchell, and when the game was over, we thought he had seven or eight 3’s, and what made us think that was everyone else was making shots as well,” Lynx head coach Brent Deckert said. “If you get to know Evan off the basketball court, you’d just think he’s another great kid, but when you really watch him closely he’s a fierce competitor. He doesn’t need a rah-rah speech. He just shows up every day with an attitude to beat your butt and move on to whatever is next.”
Cade Terveer dropped in 17 points and Carter Olthoff added 11 to the cause. They both swished in a tret, along with a pair from Caden Deckert and one from senior Max Wilde.
Deckert said his team’s offensive attack from the outside wasn’t in Tuesday’s game plan, but Deckert said he surely wasn’t going to “fix” what wasn’t broken.
“We’ve always thought if we just get some guys to make shots, it will take some pressure off of our best players, and that’s exactly what happened in Mitchell Tuesday night,” he said.
On the defensive side of the ball in the first half, the Kernels had few answers for BV’s inside attack. Behind a 10-0 run, the Lynx pulled away from Mitchell half way through the second quarter, plugging their 26-12 advantage. With 90 seconds to play in the half, the Kernels trimmed BV’s lead to 10 (37-17) on a Jordon Johnson basket and a Baley Miller 3-pointer.
BV made things worse for Mitchell in the third quarter, stepping up their perimeter game by drilling seven of their 10 3-pointers, extending their 10-point lead to 22 as they headed into the fourth.
While the Lynx added 10 points in the fourth, Mitchell’s 16-point effort in the quarter wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit and the 73-57 ending.
For Mitchell, who list seven seniors on their roster, had three players finish in double figures. Vincent Michael and Carter Cavanaugh each had 11 points. Johnson added 10, while Kiel Nelson and Miller each had eight points. Carter Jacobsen dropped in six.
The Lynx had the definite advantage on the boards, 31-21. The Lynx were led by Olthoff, who had eight. Talcott, Terveer and Cole Siegfried each had four to their credit. Mitchell’s rebounding effort was led by Carter Jacobsen, who had four.
Nate Keegan dished out two of BV’s seven total assists. Terveer and Caden Deckert both picked off a pair of steals; the Lynx had five total assists. Mitchell charted three assists and three steals. BV turned the ball over 10 times to Mitchell’s 14.
“It’s always nice to start the new year off with a win, but we just want to keep taking improvement steps,” Deckert said.
