The Absent Uncle: Those last days
So, our vacation comes to an end. (I still need to explore the idea of a vacation when retired – coming soon!)
We extended our time by almost a week by visiting my wife’s mom and family in the San Diego area. Truthfully, we were both ready to just return home – but – we could make this visit and save us a round-trip ticket from Houston to San Diego. Just an extra one-way ticket. So, we made the commitment of the San Diego visit.
It has been a good time; seeing her mom in her 90’s reminds me that time is precious, and I know regardless of our current wishes – the San Diego extension was the right thing to do.
But it has been cold! San Diego in May is supposed to be in the mid 70’s. This year – low 60’s.
After spending so much time on the beach in warm weather over the past few weeks, we now find ourselves having to wear long pants and a jacket. You would think about complaining, but in all reality, it is temperate and really not at all that uncomfortable – just unexpected.
The visit has been great. We stay with my wife’s younger sister on the outskirts of San Diego. We are so fortunate to have hosts in the area that have an open bed and a car we can borrow.
So tomorrow we head to the airport – with so much luggage! – filled with memories, and thankful that we can enjoy our life at this time. We worked hard, we saved, we planned, and – we were/are extremely fortunate. I recognize that. So many forks in the road when choices needed to be made – some were good choices – some not so good; but the end result (knock on wood) is working, and we are enjoying the time.
