From the Pulpit: Made in His image

Father Andrew Young, Risen Savior

In the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, we hear the creation story on how God created all the things of this world: light, darkness, water, birds, animals and finally man. We are told that on the sixth day, God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness.”  We are told then, “He created them; male and female.” What a wonderfully generous God to create this world and then to give us this incredible gift of life. When people celebrate birthdays at my parish, I often remind them that we are called to live our lives well and do all that the Lord desires of us. How precious is the wonderful gift of life…all life in whatever stages!

Over the past three years since I have lived in Brandon, the value I have placed on life has only grown through my interaction within the community, especially that of adults and children needing accommodations. The community of Brandon is an incredible witness to the dignity of all life, especially when it comes to those who have special needs. Whether it be the amazing Special Olympics, Best Buddies at BVHS, Cup of Joy Ministries or our new restaurant in town, Buddies and Co.

In May 2021, I attended the Post-Covid Special Olympics at the high school track. Only the local Brandon Valley Special Olympics athletes competed. I had only been in town for about a week but was told that I could not miss this event. The entire football stands were filled with parents, teachers, students and friends cheering on the athletes competing on the track. True excitement and joy could be felt in the gathered crowd as they showed their love for the competitors. I thought to myself, “Where am I?”. This is not normal. That was just the beginning of recognizing the incredible ways that this community recognizes the God-given dignity of every person.

This past year, between the girls and boys high school basketball double-header, our very own Special Olympics basketball players competed. The high school teams sat on the bench and cheered, the band played, cheerleaders led the student body in cheers, the adults stood, and the jaws dropped of the opposing team’s fans who watched in amazement. We all saw young athletes made in the image and likeness of God. Additionally, our parish, Risen Savior, was privileged to host the high school “Cup of Joy” student-run coffee cart last spring. Youths with special needs came and served coffee to members of our parish after our daily service, but it was much more than coffee. They provided our community joy through their service, smiles and genuine love. I’m looking forward to the next opportunity we get to be recipients of such a blessing.

Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God. How do we use that gift to be shared with others? Praise God we have a community that recognizes that gift in all of us, from the smallest to the eldest. I surely hope that I am living out my calling just as I witnessed in each of these students and adults – living my life to its fullest potential and bringing genuine joy to others…like Christ.
