Hubers to lead beginning band camp next week at BV Intermediate School
Del Hubers, the instrumental director at Brandon Valley Intermediate School, will once again lead a three-day camp fnext week or beginning band members. With more than 165 incoming student-musicians, Hubers said attendance will be beneficial for all.
Beginning band camp is set for Aug 11-13. Sections of the band will rehearse in three locations in three timeslots:
BVIS Band Room: 9-9:50 a.m., clarinets; 10-10:50 a.m., saxophones; 11-11:50 a.m., trombones
BVIS Chorus Room: 9-9:50 a.m., flutes; 10-10:50 a.m., trumpets; 11-11:50 a.m., French horns
BVIS Commons: 9-9:50 a.m., percussion; 10-10:50 a.m., baritones; 11-11:50 a.m., tubas.
There is no registration or fee to attend the camp, but students will need to have their band instruments and books at the start of the camp.
Flutes, clarinets, saxes, trumpets and trombones can be rented/purchased from Popplers Music or Schmitt Music, both of which are located in Sioux Falls. Taylor Music in Aberdeen also carries these instruments, and renting an instrument is highly recommended for beginning band students. Hubers warns parents of purchasing instruments online, as the craftsmanship and quality of the discounted brands can be questionable.
Students selected to play the tuba, baritone or French horn will receive the instrument at band camp. Percussionists will need to rent/purchase a bell kit.
All beginning band students will need to purchase the following music books: Tradition of Excellence Book 1 and the First Performance Book.
Percussionists will also need to purchase The Performing Percussionist – Book 1.
Other supplies that will need to be purchased are: Clarinets/Saxes: Reeds (Vandoren 2 or 2 1/2 is recommended); Brass: Valve oil; and Percussionists: Vic Firth SD1 General Snare Drum sticks.
