Youngsters earn black belts, make an impact
It was a hot summer at Hoover’s Martial Arts and Circuit Fitness in Brandon, where many students became 1st Degree Black Belts.
The rank requires 18 months of training and successful test scores in five areas: traditional taekwondo forms, traditional taekwondo sparring, board break techniques, weapon techniques and fitness.
Two students also earned 2nd Degree Black Belts, which requires testing and one year of training.
Make an Impact
Every summer, the students at Hoover’s Martial Arts/Circuit Fitness are encouraged to make an impact by undertaking a summer service project of their choice. At the end of the summer, results are submitted and winners announced. All participants are recognized for their projects at Hoover’s annual family BBQ.
This year’s winner is Madisyn Rust. Her impact project was “Christmas in July.” Rust sold handmade ornaments made by women in Africa with disabilities. Her goal was two-fold, with the majority of the profits given to orphans in poverty. The remaining portion was shared with the women who created the ornaments. In total, Rust raised $635 from her project.
Upcoming events
Circuit Fitness promotes not only getting in shape, but also giving back to the community. On Saturdays from 8-9 a.m. the center is offering a free community fitness class for adults. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 1, Circuit Fitness will host Family Fun Fest at McHardy Park in Brandon. The event is free, but a $5 per person donation to the Brandon Area Food Pantry is suggested. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and participate in good, old-fashioned games for the whole family.
