Staff report
City government filings open Jan. 25

On the heels of the calendar turning to 2019, there are a variety of forthcoming vacancies on the Brandon City Council, Valley Springs City Commission and Brandon Valley Board of Education this year.
Several of the Brandon council openings are due to resignations and appointments in 2018.
The position of mayor, currently filled by Paul Lundberg, is the first of four council vacancies in Brandon. Lundberg was appointed in October following the unanticipated resignation of long-time mayor Larry Beesley. Beesley, who was nine months shy of completing his fourth, four-year term, resigned Aug. 22, 2018, for health reasons.
Lundberg has indicated he intends to seek election.
TJ Cameron, who also sought the mayoral appointment, has indicated that he, too, will be vying for the mayoral role.
Brett Bastian was appointed Aug. 20 by the council to fill the void in Ward 1 that was created when Blaine Jones resigned.
In Ward 2, Dana Clark took that council seat by appointment June 2. The chair was previously filled by Don Wells, who resigned for job relocation reasons.
The term of Jo Hausman, who was first elected to represent Ward 2 in May 2011, also expires this year.
All three have hinted they will file to retain their respective assignments.
The Valley Springs mayor job will also be up for grabs this May. Carl Moss, who has served four years in this capacity, said he plans to seek re-election. Prior to his mayoral role, Moss has a 12-year history as a city commissioner.
The terms of BV Board of Education president Renee Ullom and board member Cary Schroeder expire in 2019. Ullom has served on the school board for 12 years and Schroeder has a six-year history in this capacity.
The filing period for the Brandon City Council and Valley Springs City Commission begins Friday, Jan. 25 and closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. Voters will go to the polls Tuesday, April 9.
Nomination petitions for the school board may be circulated starting April 9. Filing deadline is May 10 and the election is Tuesday, June 18.
