Wayne M. Barnes, 77, Brandon, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022 at Bethany Home, Brandon. Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at George Boom Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Wayne was born on Feb. 2, 1944, the son of Gerald and Ellene (Anderson) Barnes in Madison, S.D. He was raised and educated in Madison. At a very young age he developed a love for the rodeo and followed in his brother’s footsteps. He rode saddle broncs, bulls and also did some roping. He was united in marriage to Loy Sandstrom on Sept. 22, 1965 in Pipestone, Minn. They made their home in Sioux Falls before moving to Worthington, Minn., in 1970. Wayne and Loy moved back to South Dakota in the early 1990’s, making their home in Brandon. After his rodeo days were over, Wayne started his career with Chicago & North Western Railroad and continued until his retirement in 1992.

Wayne was a member of Brandon Lutheran Church and the Elks Lodge. He had a variety of pets throughout his life, cats, dogs, birds, fish and horses. Wayne enjoyed riding his bike and golfing with his friend, Jerry Woelfel. Wayne was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. But the time he cherished the most was time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Loy Barnes of Brandon; children, Tim (Kathy) Barnes, Mary (Brian) Horn and Wade (Shannon) Barnes, all of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; siblings, Richard (Mert) Barnes of Edmonds, Wash.; Patty (Jeff) VanDyke of Norfolk, Neb.; Ed (Jackie) Sprouse of Sioux Falls; Dale (Sandy) Sprouse of Blaine, Minn.; Julie (Dave) Mork of Sioux Falls; numerous nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dennis and Gary Barnes, sister, Marijo Barnes Keller and great granddaughter, Hadley Horn.
