Wayne Allen, 86, of Brandon, S.D., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at Bethany Home in Brandon with his family by his side. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021, at Brandon Lutheran Church in Brandon. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, 2021, also at the church. Additional obituary information, online guestbook, and service live stream link will be available at www.georgeboom.com

Wayne R. Allen, son of Wayne D. and Lorraine (Reed) Allen was born July 12, 1934, in Mitchell, S.D. He graduated from Mitchell High School with the class of 1952. He served in the United States Army until earning his Honorable Discharge in 1956 at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. Wayne earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Dakota Wesleyan and later his Master’s Degree from Northern State University. While in college he met his future wife, Doreen Pederson. They were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1958 and were blessed with three daughters, Carla, Shelly, and Juli.

Wayne’s teaching career started at Howard for one year, Ethan from 1960-1965, Centerville from 1965-1969, and then he found his home at Brandon. He was hired as the Brandon Valley High School guidance counselor and driver’s education instructor. Wayne was an assistant coach for football and boys’ basketball. He started the BVHS girls’ basketball program and was the head coach for 12 years. He was also the head volleyball coach and enjoyed firing the starting pistol at local and area track meets for many years.

Wayne was inducted to the Brandon Valley Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Ethan High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Wayne and Doreen have been longtime members of Brandon Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Valley Springs American Legion, life member of the Brandon VFW, life member of SDEA-NEA, life member of the SD Coaches Association, and life member of the SD Basketball Association.

In his spare time, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in music and sporting events. He also enjoyed oil painting and watching the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He was proud to be a member of the 1951 Mitchell State American Legion baseball championship team. Wayne’s family was number one in his life. He was so proud to have coached all three daughters in basketball and softball and see his grandchildren become involved in athletics.  

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doreen, of Brandon; daughters, Carla (Gregg) Damme of Sioux Falls, Shelly Lozano of Porterville, Calif., and Juli (Scott) Peterson of Brandon; eight grandchildren, Karlee (Scott) Mannes of Sioux Falls, Kaitlin Damme of Sioux Falls, Kiah (Bryce Krieger) Damme of Sioux Falls, Shelby Lozano of Porterville, Shane Lozano of Porterville, Jordan (Nick) Eichacker of Sioux Falls, Jess (Kris) Kriech of Brandon, and Nic Peterson of Sioux Falls; five great-grandchildren, Kendyl and Kalli Kriech, Ellie and Emmitt Wayne Eichacker, and Hudson Mannes; and sister-in-law, Caryl Funk of Parker, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Lorraine (Reed) Allen; step-father, Elmo Fouberg; brother, Roger Allen; and great-granddaughter, Jade Kriech.
