Water committee gets to work

Brandon’s water development committee sat down together for its first meeting of the minds last Tuesday night.
Members of the volunteer group made introductions before wading through a history of Brandon water projects from 1995 to the present, as well as current system needs identified by Stockwell Engineers and 20-year projected needs. Delivered by Stockwell president Jon Brown, the information focused on four areas: water supply, treatment, storage and distribution, and echoed the presentation Brown gave at the Oct. 10 public water meeting.
The task force also looked at well water test results compiled by city administrator Bryan Read, who also serves on the committee.
The results showed no contaminant levels exceeding the maximum contaminant level (MCL) set by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Primary Drinking Water Standards. The results showed a high level of total dissolved solids, a secondary contaminant, and water hardness to be 22.5 percent. Read said the average in South Dakota is 22 to 50 percent.
Committee member Tim Wakefield requested additional test results, which alderman and committee chair Don Wells emailed to members following the Nov. 14 meeting.
The city authorized the formation of the water development committee after hearing concerns from residents about the quantity and quality of Brandon’s water supply. The voluntary group formed to gather information on Brandon’s water system needs and make recommendations to the city council.
The task force will set a mission statement and prioritize topics for upcoming agendas at its next meeting, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the council chambers.
The committee will begin by tackling water conservation and  continue to meet every other Tuesday.
Meetings are open to the public and may be viewed on YouTube.
