Valley Springs looks at city clerk candidates

Staff report
The Valley Springs Commission hopes to hire a new city clerk in the coming weeks, and the community hopes to welcome a new business in the coming months.
After receiving the resignation of Sandy Severtson earlier this year, the commission has narrowed down the pool of applicants for their finance officer vacancy to three. Mayor Carl Moss said the commission plans to conduct interviews this week and hopes to have the new clerk in place “as soon as possible.”
The commission reviewed applications during executive session at its May 14 meeting.
Severtson, who was involved in a two-vehicle accident this winter requiring extensive rehabilitation, resigned April 9.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the commission also approved Rick Gourley’s request for a new liquor retail and package license for his forthcoming business, Broadway Gas & Grill, a gas station, convenience store/restaurant Gourley Properties is bringing to the community. Renovations on the former gas station began last year, and Moss said Gourley hopes to open in the next month or two.
The commission also considered options for repairing a sewer line along Cliff Avenue, which will most likely require replacing pipes, Moss said. Gabe Laber with DGR Engineering was present for the discussion.
“We are seeing what our options are on updating the sewer system and what it’s going to cost to repair,” Moss said. “We’re in the process of lining it up. We do have infiltration coming in. It’s in the very early stages.”
The board also gave part-time office clerk Sandy Namanny a $1/hour raise, appointed commissioner Brian Staeffler to act as mayor in Moss’s absence and adjourned until 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 11.
