There’s a bright future for football at Brandon Valley, and on Saturday afternoon, two Peewee division teams – both hailing from Brandon Valley – squared off in the South Dakota Junior Football Division championship game played on the artificial turf at Howard Wood Field.
Despite Interstate Construction winning the 12-6 overtime outcome against MSH Architects, both teams came away from the experience as winners. In the hour leading up to kickoff, the squads gathered for an all-BV team pic where Nick Stroh, assistant coach for Interstate Construction, gave the boys a short pep talk on unity.
“Look to the guy to the left of you. Now look to the guy to the right of you,” Stroh said. “You all bleed red and black. Today is going to be a fantastic day to play football, and here’s the deal. Whoever wins, Brandon Valley is still going to come out on top, and in a couple of years, the jerseys you put on will all be the same color.”
Stroh said it was important for the boys to know “they’ll be on the same team.”
“They go to school with each other, they play ball at recess together, they share the same classroom and are friends, and they still have the same camaraderie that only a Brandon Valley team can give,” he said.
Heading into Saturday’s finale, Interstate Construction, coached by Allan Pudwill and Kevin Peters, and assisted by Stroh and Matt Swenson, had accumulated a 9-1 win-loss record. MSH Architects, coached by Jesse Black and Jesse Fischer, were unscathed at 10-0.
Thirty-five teams competed in the Peewee division this year, including a third Brandon Valley team, Gerry’s Concrete, who was coached by Leon Hall.
“They were a team full of talent that caught a tough draw in the first round,” Swenson said.
