The family band the Teels (from L) Dalton Coffey, Abbie Teel Coffey, Liz Teel and Clyde Teel will give an outdoor folk and bluegrass concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Corson Playhouse for the Mighty Corson Art Players’ 35th anniversary. The Teels, a family band that has been playing together over 30 years, will cap off the Mighty Corson Art Players’ 35th anniversary celebration Sunday, Sept. 17.
An open house from 4-6 p.m. gets the party started at the Corson Playhouse. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cake will be served. Pictures, memorabilia and artifacts will be on display. A continuous slide show of photos will also be shown.
The theatre’s historic painted theater curtain, which had been on display in the Brandon Museum, returns to its original home, the Corson Hall. In addition, pictures and posters of two other theatre groups – the Corson Dramatic Club (1925-30) and the Peperites (1935-40) - will also be on display.
A short program at 5 p.m. honoring the organizers of MCAP, casts of the first plays and awards for “Most Performances,” “Most Shows Directed,” “Most Characters Played,” and more will be presented.
At 7 p.m., The Teels will take the stage. They play everything from the traditional bluegrass of Bill Monroe to the new style of Allison Krauss, original material, as well as songs in the style of Sarah Jarosz and the Carter Family, with a little Texas swing thrown in at times.
Band members include Clyde Teel (guitar, banjo, mando, vox), Liz Teel (guitar, vox), Abbie Coffey (bass, vox) and the band’s newest member, son-in-law Dalton Coffey (dobro, guitar, mando, vox).
MCAP is one of the longest existing community theaters in the area. Its first show, the melodrama “Deadwood Dick,” was presented in 1982. MCAP will perform its 73rd production, the farce “Boeing, Boeing,” on Oct. 20-22 and 27-29 at the Corson Playhouse.
