“USS Indianapolis” is Military History Night topic
The Valley Springs American Legion will be hosting a Military History Night at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 at the Post Home.
Brandon Valley High School History teacher Jeremy Risty will give a presentation of the history of the “USS Indianapolis,” which was a heavy cruiser that saw service with the U.S. Navy throughout World War II.
Following the presentation there will be a time for discussion and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.
 
BV Boosters expand Hall of Fame banquets to two nights
Brandon Valley Athletic Hall of Fame’s 2020 and 2021 inductees will be recognized on two separate evenings in March. The 2020 inductees––Heidi (Hoff) Hausmann, class of 2009; Mike Meyers, Class of 1982; Dan Hanson, Class of 1976; and the 2011 state champion Lady Lynx basketball team––will be celebrated at the Friday, March 26 banquet. The 2020 banquet was called off due to COVID-19.
The 2021 inductees––Lynx head football coach Chad Garrow and BV head boys’ basketball coach Brent Deckert––will be inducted Saturday, March 27. 
Tickets are $25 per person per night and may be purchased at the BV High School office starting March 1.
Both banquets will start at 7 p.m. at the Brandon Holiday Inn.

Try Hockey for Free Day this Saturday
Brandon Valley Hockey Association will host a Try Hockey for Free Day on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the McHardy Park outdoor rink in Brandon. Check in and equipment fitting is from 9:45-10:30 a.m. and fun on the ice takes place from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
The event is open to boys and girls ages 3-8. Pre-registration is required, and to do so, visit Tryhockeyforfree.com (search zip code 57005).
In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Scheel’s Ice Plex in Sioux Falls.
 
TOPS open to all
The Brandon chapter of TOPS, “Take Off Pounds Sensibly,” meets at 9 a.m. Mondays at Brandon Lutheran Church, 600 E. Holly Blvd. Participants should park in the east parking lot and use the main entrance.
 TOPS is for both men and women, and the group’s purpose is to encourage, motivate and support one another.
