Brandon Lions to 

dedicate bench

Brandon Lions Club and American Legion Post 318 invites the public to a bench dedication ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 at the Veterans Memorial (intersection of Aspen and Splitrock boulevards) in Brandon. The bench dedication coincides with the Club’s 60th and Lions International’s 100th anniversaries this year.

In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the Brandon City Council Chambers.

 

Community Spirit Award nominations

Got spirit, community spirit, or know of someone who does? The Brandon Community Foundation is accepting nominations through Aug. 15. Nominees must live in the school district and helped to make the community a better place to live, work and play. 

Forms are online at brandoncf.org. The Community Spirit Award will be presented Driday, Oct. 27 at the BCF’s Oak & Vine fundraiser. 

 

BCF grant applications

The Brandon Community Foundation is accepting grant applications through Sept. 29. 

The BCF awards grants to Brandon area 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations that strive to improve quality of life in the arts, recreation, education, health and public safety.

Library closed 

for improvements

The Brandon Community Library is closed through Sunday, Aug. 20, for new carpeting.

Items on hold will be at the library entrance 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The library may experience delays in accessing holds.

‘Gitchie Girl’ 

gathering Aug. 10

The Gnadt family’s longtime interest and personal connection to the Gitchie Manitou crime has inspired a gathering with Sandra Cheskey Chrans, the lone survivor. The event will be held in the Gathering Room at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 on the second floor of Family Floors and Furniture, 224 S. Splitock Blvd., Brandon. The event location is not handicapped accessible.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Schedule change days for Brandon Valley High School are set.

Call 582-3211 for an appointment. Slots are open for juniors and seniors Aug. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; for freshmen and sophomores, Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Forms must be signed by a parent or guardian.

New physicals required

for BV athletes, band

All Brandon Valley high and middle school students who plan to participate in athletics and/or marching band must have a new physical and complete the district’s physical form, which may be downloaded at brandonvalley.k12.sd.us.

Monthly needs at the Brandon Food Pantry

The Brandon Area Food Pantry accepts donations for needy families. The pantry currently needs strawberry or grape jelly or jam, snack pudding, Knorr noodles and rice dishes, brownie mix, cake mix, frosting, Styrofoam or paper plates and bodywash. Items cannot be expired. Monetary donations are always appreciated.

The BAFP is open 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 406 Main Ave. Call 582-7001 to learn more.

The Brandon Lions Club welcomes donations of aluminum cans, which help fund requests for vision and hearing impairment needs. Cans may be dropped off at the Lions Club shed in the Sunshine Foods parking lot.
